There are numerous pieces of advice for white-collar workers who are looking for office work. But that advice doesn’t entirely align with the blue and grey collar work culture. The workspace and environment are quite different from white-collar people. Therefore the tips for the interview need to be different as well.

Preparation before the Interview:


It is always better to be prepared ahead for an interview, whether it takes place in an office or in the factory. Little carelessness can lead an interviewer to make a negative judgement about the candidate. So, it is important to follow some basic tips to avoid such circumstances:


The dress code:


Make sure to wear clean and neat clothes. An industrial job interview doesn’t require a three-piece suit. Simple clean clothing of khakis can be appropriate clothing. Although it may depend on the employer and his company. If not sure, go with a neutral colour shirt and pants.


Keep all your documents handy:


It is important that you carry all your documents in an interview. If we specifically talk about ITI candidates, who might hold some qualification certificate, should always take their diploma/degree certificates and work experience certificates if any, in an interview session. It makes the interviewer understand you better. If it’s the blue-collar worker, with no such qualification and education, can just simply jot down their work experience in a note and speak about them while giving an interview. But it is better to prepare small and effective biodata or resume.


Carefully read the Job Description:


It is obviously a common point for the candidates giving any kind of job interview. Reading the job description carefully can give you an idea of exactly what the interview is searching for in the candidates and how you can align your knowledge and experience with it. Along with this, also read about the company and its work profile. It will help to give an overview of the space you are approaching. You can express your skill and experience in the alignment of the company’s work profile.

Comparatively, In blue and grey collar job interviews questions are generally not tricky. The employers mostly ask straightforward questions about the qualification, the work experience and other basic details about yourself.

In the ITI field, no questions are generally asked for apprenticeships. But in terms of jobs, the interviewer will be keen to ask about the ‘trade’ you are an expert in. For example: if you are in the electrical trade, the interviewer might ask questions related to wiring.


Other than this, the interviewer might ask questions like, ‘Why do you want this job?’ or ‘why should you be hired?’ While answering these questions, always be humble about your eagerness to get a job and explain your skills that can help the company and its team. If you have some extra skills, add that to your answer. Because it can give you an upper hand in your job selection.


Show your dedication:


If there is a question regarding overtime and extra work, straight away don’t say no to the employer. Show that you will be a dedicated and reliable employee to the company. If a question seems tricky to you, don’t answer in a hurry. Think about it and then answer. You can ask the interviewer to give you time to think about it.


Attitude:

Along with communicating your points to the interviewer. It is equally important to be a good listener while the interviewer speaks about something. Haste can hamper the quality of your answer. More than bookish knowledge, interviewers will be much interested to know your behaviour towards the company. How loyal and hardworking you will be, how long you will be able to work for the company, etc. So, instead of getting pressured by the questions, remain calm and give answers with confidence. And show that you are optimistic and ready to take on all challenges.
